Mediator Profile: Gary Austin

Loves to help people

Loves to solve puzzles

Wants to make a difference

This sums up Gary’s desire to volunteer with The Mediation Center of Greater Green Bay. Gary comes to us from Connecticut, where he grew up and received his education.  He and his wife, Dee, met at the University of Connecticut and were married in 1978.  Gary majored in Physics and minored in Mathematics and began his working life in the field of submarine sonar research at a naval laboratory.  When he was nearing the “ripe” old age of 40, he decided to change careers and turn a hobby into his livelihood.  He pursued his dream of studying meteorology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, receiving his master’s degree in 1995.  His first job was as a meteorologist Science & Operations Officer with the National Weather Service in Duluth, MN and in 1999 he transferred to Green Bay to become the meteorologist in charge of the office.  While as an administrator, Gary was introduced to the process of mediation and was intrigued.  After retirement he became aware of the Mediation Center and decided to participate in a mediation training session.  The rest is history.  Gary is active in small claims, evictions and in family mediation cases.  His favorite type of mediation is working with families.  He loves the challenge of solving the puzzles each mediation situation provides and is gratified when he can see that he has made a positive difference in the participant’s lives.  The “frosting on the cake” is his opportunity to work for and collaborate with the director and coordinators at the Mediation Center, whose dedication, insight and sense of humor add much fun to the volunteer experience.
